Overview
One of the ways that LaTeX excels is in its ability to display equations. Very many equations require characters or symbols that are part of standard ASCII text, like that found on a keyboard. However, most equations require symbols not part of ASCII. Latex, has a fairly simple way to indicate the symbol that needs to be rendered.
Equation Tags
There are several ways to write an equation in latex. A simple way to embed an equation is to enclose it with dollar sign tags as follows:
$ x=5 $
If you want the equation to stand out from the rest of the test, the equation tags can be used.
\begin{equation}
x=5
\end{equation}
LaTeX - Equations
The following are a common set of symbols used in the latex equations.
\sum - the sum symbol, {% \sum %}
\int - the integral symbol
\mathbb{E} - the expectation symbol
{\displaystyle \int_{a}^{b} } - large integral
The results of the above latex is given:

Subscripts are indicated with a "_" and a superscript is indicated with "^":
