Overview
An individuals productivity can generally be seen as the level of the employees skill (from education and experience) times the level of their engagment.
{% Individual \, Productivity = skill \times engagement %}
A teams productivity can be viewed as the sum of the productivity of the individual team members
times a factor that measures the alignment of the team members. (that is, team members working at cross
purposes reduce the overall team productivity)
{% Team \; Productivity = Alignment \times \sum Individual \, Productivity %}
As a summary, one can state a reduced formula as follows:
{% Productivity = skill \times engagement \times alignment %}
Policy Implications
- Skill - companies that need to increase the skill of their workforce should consider structuring work in a way to produces cross-training among employees. As a further measure, consider investing in employee education. (ssee Human Capital)
- Alignment - is a function of leadership. Have the leaders communicated the vision and goals clearly, and in such a manner as to generate buy-in.
- Engagment
- engagement is an matter of employee incentives. Do employees enjoy their work and find it meaningful. Have the leaders communicated
the vision well enough to generate buy-in.
Employee wellness issues can also play a part. Employees who do not get enough sleep or exercise, or experience burn-out, will generally not be engaged in work.
